Self-Hosting RiiviveTube

Run your own YouTube server for the Wii

Self-Hosting Guide

Host your own RiiviveTube instance and have full control over your server. This guide will walk you through the installation and setup process. Join our Discord if you need additional support.

System Requirements

Operating System: Linux (Ubuntu 20.04+ recommended). While running this on Windows may work, it is not supported.

  • • ffmpeg - for video conversion
  • • git - for cloning the repository
  • • Python 3 (3.11+) with pip
  • • Java OpenJDK 21 or higher
  • • 4GB RAM minimum (8GB+ recommended)

Installation Steps

Step 1: Update system and install dependencies

  • • Run the following commands on your Linux system:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo apt install -y python3 python3-pip git ffmpeg openjdk-21-jdk-headless

Step 2: Clone the repository

git clone https://github.com/ReviveMii/riivivetube && cd riivivetube

Step 3: Run the setup script

bash scripts/setupInstance.sh

Step 4: Install Python dependencies

pip install -r requirements.txt

Step 5: Start the server

python3 main.py

The server will run on port 5005 by default. You can change the port here.

Patching Your WAD

Use the ReviveMii Patcher tool:

  • • Download the patcher from the GitHub releases and extract it
  • • Run the patcher GUI: python3 main.py
  • • Select your console region (Europe, USA, or Japan)
  • • Enter your instance URL (e.g., http://192.168.xxx.xxx:5005)
  • • Click Patch to generate the patched WAD
  • • Install the patched WAD using your WAD Manager

Avoiding YouTube IP Blocking

Problem: YouTube may block or rate-limit your server IP.

Solution: Use a cookies.txt file to authenticate requests:

  • • Follow the yt-dlp documentation to generate a cookies.txt file
  • • Place the cookies.txt file in the RiiviveTube directory
  • • The application will automatically use the cookies for all requests
  • • You may need to install a JS runtime to use cookies. Please follow the yt-dlp documentation to install a JS runtime

Troubleshooting

Port already in use

If port 5005 is already in use, either kill the process using that port or change the port.

ffmpeg not found

Ensure ffmpeg is installed and in your PATH. Verify with:

which ffmpeg
  • Download ffmpeg here

Java not found

Check if OpenJDK 21 is installed correctly:

java -version
  • Download Java here. Install the .msi file, if using Windows

Server fails to start

Check the error messages and ensure all dependencies are properly installed. Try updating pip and requirements:

pip install --upgrade -r requirements.txt

Advanced Configuration

Custom Port

To run RiiviveTube on a different port, edit the main.py file and rerun the setup script

Running as a Service

To run RiiviveTube as a systemd service, create a service file at /etc/systemd/system/riivivetube.service:

[Unit]
Description=RiiviveTube YouTube Server
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=youruser
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/riivivetube
ExecStart=/usr/bin/python3 main.py
Restart=always

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Then enable and start it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable riivivetube
sudo systemctl start riivivetube
